Swiss system tournament

Swiss system for 24 players: round 1, and the sheet for the rest

These are the 12 matches you start with. From round 2 on, everyone plays someone on their points, so the pairings come out of what happens on court.

It follows the order you write the names in: the top half plays the bottom half, so if you know who plays better, put them first and no round comes out lopsided.

After each round

Add up the points and pair on them

  • Win a match and you play someone else who won.
  • Lose it and you play someone else who lost, not the leader.
  • You never repeat an opponent: if you have already met, it drops to the next player on those points.
  • At the end, whoever has most points after 5 rounds wins.

Why 5 rounds

It is what it takes to leave one winner

With 24 players, everyone against everyone would be 276 matches.

More

Every round splits the players who are level in two, so after 5 rounds one is left on top without anyone having played the whole field. That is why a Swiss fits in an afternoon and a round robin of 24 does not.

You can play fewer rounds if you are short of time: the table still works, there may just be more than one player level at the top.

The score sheet

The other 4 rounds are written in by hand

Who plays who in round 2 depends on who wins round 1, so they cannot be printed in advance.

More

That is not a shortcoming of this page: a sheet with all 5 rounds written out gets thrown away after the first one. Here you get the blank grid, and at the end of each round you write down who played who and how it went.

One row per player: each round you write down who they played and whether they won. The right-hand column is what sorts the next round.
