How it works out8 players · 8 rounds
Matches per player 8, everyone
Partner repeated 4 times
Opponent repeated 36 times
Sits out two rounds in a row nobody
  • With 8 rounds and 8 players there is no way for nobody to repeat a partner: the combinations do not stretch that far. The repeats are spread as far apart as possible.

Why these pairings

With 8 rounds and 7 possible partners, repeating is arithmetic

Possible partners for each player7
Partners used in 8 rounds8
Meetings with opponents in 8 rounds16, with 7 opponents

Opponents do repeat: there are two per round and not that many to go round.

Read the explanation

In an americano every match is four people: one partner and two opponents. Pairs are remade every round and the standings are individual. You score by games won, not by matches, and that is what makes it not matter who you get.

With 8 players, each one has 7 possible partners and uses 8 of them over 8 rounds. Since 8 does not fit inside 7, repeating a partner is not a flaw in the draw: it is arithmetic. With 8 players there are not 8 different partners to give.

Opponents run out much sooner: you face two per round, so 16 meetings across 8 rounds against the 7 opponents that exist. That is why repeating an opponent here is unavoidable: there are no 16 different opponents to give.

Splitting 8 people into different pairs every round is a variant of the social golfer problem, which has no perfect solution for every number. The draw looks for the best arrangement available: everyone plays the same number of matches, no repeated partner and nobody sits out twice in a row. Whatever did not work out is stated above, with its number: that is what you need to know before printing, not on court.

Running it on Peldia, and everyone keeps their record

Each player signs themselves up from a link with no registration, scores go in from a phone at the court and the table comes out on its own.

And the record carries into next month's americano: level and which partner they play best with. If you run a club or an academy, you see who is improving, who has stalled and who has not turned up in weeks.

Creating your own needs an account, and those screens are in English too.
