Opponent repeated 20 times
Sits out two rounds in a row nobody
  • With 10 players and 2 courts the numbers do not divide evenly: some play 7 matches and others 6. That is the smallest possible gap, not an oversight.
  • Repeating an opponent is normal: every match gives you one partner and two opponents, so the match-ups run out much sooner.

Why these pairings

Nobody repeats a partner across the 8 rounds

Possible partners for each player9
Partners used in 8 rounds8
Meetings with opponents in 8 rounds16, with 9 opponents

Opponents do repeat: there are two per round and not that many to go round.

Read the explanation

In an americano every match is four people: one partner and two opponents. Pairs are remade every round and the standings are individual. You score by games won, not by matches, and that is what makes it not matter who you get.

With 10 players, each one has 9 possible partners and uses 8 of them over 8 rounds. Since 8 fits inside 9, never repeating a partner is possible, and this draw manages it.

Opponents run out much sooner: you face two per round, so 16 meetings across 8 rounds against the 9 opponents that exist. That is why repeating an opponent here is unavoidable: there are no 16 different opponents to give.

Splitting 10 people into different pairs every round is a variant of the social golfer problem, which has no perfect solution for every number. The draw looks for the best arrangement available: everyone plays the same number of matches, no repeated partner and nobody sits out twice in a row. Whatever did not work out is stated above, with its number: that is what you need to know before printing, not on court.

What you need for 10 players

A match is four people. The draw rotates who sits out so that it falls to everyone equally.

Settings

Change the rounds, the courts or put the names in

The same settings always give the same draw: you can print it, close the page and come back without it reshuffling. The address carries the names, so it can be shared as it is.

Other sizes

More of you, or fewer?

Any number between 4 and 40 works: open the closest one and change the number in the address.

Running it on Peldia, and everyone keeps their record

Each player signs themselves up from a link with no registration, scores go in from a phone at the court and the table comes out on its own.

And the record carries into next month's americano: level and which partner they play best with. If you run a club or an academy, you see who is improving, who has stalled and who has not turned up in weeks.

Creating your own needs an account, and those screens are in English too.
